Title IX: Equality is the Law since 1972

Many people have never heard of Title IX.
Most people who know about Title IX think it applies only to sports, but athletics is only one of 10 key areas addressed by the law:
  1. Access to Higher Education  view info | view PSA
  2. Athletics  view info | view PSA
  3. Career Education   view info | view PSA

Since Title IX was passed 40 years ago, it has been the subject of over 20 proposed amendments, reviews, Supreme Court cases and other political actions. That's why we call it a living, breathing law. It is puzzling why there have been so many attempts to change Title IX since the intent of the law (gender equity) has not been met. Thousands of schools across the country are not in compliance with the law.^

Title IX of Education Amendments in 1972:
No matter what gender you are, you are to be allowed the same rights and privileges as the people around you in your school and place of work.

D i d   y o u   k n o w . . . ?

  • Girls who play sports are 50% less likely to get pregnant as their non-athletic peers!
  • Playing sports makes girls and boys less likely to abuse drugs & alcohol, both of which can lead to risky decisions about sex.
  • When girls participate in any physical activity, they report higher levels of self esteem and wait longer before having sex for the first time, have it less often, and have fewer partners.
  • High school athletes of both genders and all ethnicities tend to have better grades, whether it is for eligibility or just from being engaged
In El Paso County School Districts combined:
  • 62% of our community’s children are considered at-risk.
  • 70% are economically disadvantaged.
  • 1 in 2 Hispanic, African American or Native American children are likely to drop out
  • In El Paso, the Hispanic dropout rate is 45.2%
(El Paso Average: 42.7%, Texas Average:  33.2%, National Average: 30.4%)
