Announcing Title IX Awareness Community Campaign

Title IX: No person in the United States shall, based on Gender, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.

Title IX of Education Amendments in 1972

No matter what gender you are, you are to be allowed the same rights and privileges as the people around you in your school and place of work.

Why Title IX IS Important to YOU!

DID you Know?

  • Girls who play sports are 50% less likely to get pregnant as their non-athletic peers!
  • Playing sports makes girls and boys less likely to abuse drugs & alcohol, both of    which can lead to risky decisions about sex.
  • When girls participate in any physical activity, they report higher levels of self esteem and wait longer before having sex for the first time, have it less often, and have fewer partners.
  • High school athletes of both genders and all ethnicities tend to have better grades,  whether it is for eligibility or just from being engaged

In El Paso County School Districts combined:

  • 62% of our community’s children are considered at-risk.
  • 70% are economically disadvantaged.
  • 1 in 2 Hispanic, African American or Native American children are likely to drop out
  • In El Paso, the Hispanic dropout rate is 45.2%
