Project: Survivors @ Work
|
A couple of years ago, Lisa, a single mother of two beautiful little girls, ages 8 and 3, found herself seeking refuge at the Center Against Family Violence’s (CAFV) shelter. After leaving and divorcing her abusive husband, she was forced to reevaluate her life. Looking back, she realized that during her marriage, she didn’t have an opinion. She was not an individual, but rather a reluctant extension of someone else.
At the CAFV, she participated in Survivors @ Work, a program funded by the FWF. Lisa benefited from a new program where an Education Advocate assisted shelter residents in the area of job training and education. This position was created to keep women from going back to their abusive situations because they could not find a way to sustain themselves. Lisa enrolled in the University of Texas at El Paso and received her BA degree in marketing. She can make decisions for herself and her children. She loves the feeling of independence and finally is proud to be an example to her two girls. Lisa worked for a short time in Child Protective Services and later took a job working for Catholic Services planning their marketing and out reach activities. |
