Project: Sexual Assault Prevention
|
Young people in the border community of Del Rio, Texas have suffered the consequences of their community’s reluctance to having open conversations about safe dating and sexuality. Many teenage girls in the area reported that teenage boys believed going out on a date or agreeing to go to prom meant that girls were consenting to have sex. For example, a girl who parties in Ciudad Acuña or drinks too much is believed to be giving consent to sex.
With funding from the FWF, a broad educational campaign was launched to educate teenagers on safe dating practices. The campaign was two fold—1) to alert teenage girls to the dangers of date rape and 2) to educate the young men that girls are not giving sexual consent when they agree to go out on a date or attend a party. Educational materials were produced and distributed in local schools and colonias. Counselors gave presentations throughout the community and in the schools. Amistad Family Violence & Rape Crisis Center also provided training to partner agencies and sister organizations in Del Rio as well as Cd. Acuña on the Mexican side of the border where many of the assaults were occurring. |
